The old town is one long counter.
In the Parte Vieja you eat standing, one plate and one glass at a time, then move on to the next door. A good guide knows which counter sears the foie, which pours the txakoli from a height, and which to walk straight past. This is the reason most people come.

The bay saves its best for last.
An hour before sunset the whole city drifts to the railings of La Concha. Out on the water it is better still: Monte Igueldo catching the last light, Santa Clara turning to a silhouette, a glass of cava in hand as the sky burns over the Cantabrian. Some evenings you simply have to be afloat for.
The wine country runs deep.
Rioja Alavesa is ninety minutes south, all vine rows and cathedral-sized bodegas. Getaria’s txakoli grows on slopes right above the sea. Give a day to one and let someone else do the driving and the pouring.
The coast keeps going.
Ten minutes out of the city the Basque coast turns wild and small: Getaria’s fishing harbour and the striped flysch cliffs of Zumaia one way, walled Hondarribia and the painted houses of Pasaia the other. Both make an easy half-day.
An hour west, the coast turns epic.
The Guggenheim’s titanium hull put Bilbao back on the map, and the best day trips pair it with the run out to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe: a hermitage on a crag reached by a causeway and 241 stone steps, one you may recognise from television. Big art, bigger cliffs.
